Spring is still calling... very softly for those of us up north, but when that warm sun teases me through the window I start to get in the mood to play in some dirt and try my hand at growing some nice healthy weeds along with my spinach and basil.

Last year I had discovered Square Foot Gardening one of the best selling garden books on Amazon and at the time had noticed a follow up book aptly named All New Square Foot Gardening Cookbook. Now, I am a complete cookbook geek especially when they have good pictures (why a cookbook wouldn't have enticing pictures is beyond me) and this Square Foot Gardening cookbook is a beauty.

Mel Bartholomew Speaks about his Gardening Cookbook

Plenty of nice large colorful pictures of not only the dishes, but also of the vegetables and herbs - even if you aren't a gardener you'll have fun with this gardening cookbook. (But after reading this cookbook I'm sure you'll be at least a little bit inspired to try your own garden)

The author, Mel Bartholomew is a whiz in the garden (how beautiful are those plants in his garden by the way? I wanted to eat right off my monitor but it zapped my tongue) he often says eat fresh, eat healthy and eat what you grow and with a garden like that I'm sure you could make fantastic salads right out of the garden.

Not only does the Square Foot Gardening Cookbook have more than 135 recipes to enjoy the harvest from your square foot garden (or farmers market, or store if you haven't braved the garden gnomes) Mel adds harvesting techniques and yield information for each of the seventeen vegetables, fruits, and herbs and adds money saving tips, square foot garden tips, and even a kid's gardening corner for lots of family fun.

If you didn't catch my last post on EarthBoxes vs Square Foot Gardening take a peek and try one of these easy methods for yourself then have fun with some fresh from the garden recipes.

Yeowww! actually makes a rather large selection of homemade organic catnip toys and a few fun Halloween style catnip toys like the scary little pumpkins, ghosties and bats shown here.

If you have a black cat that is feeling misunderstood this Halloween season or any cat that could use a jolt of organic catnip goodness why not cheer them up with a good 'ol organic catnip toy. They may even say Yeowww!

Well this time I not only had a few very ripe bananas but I had a mango that needed to be used up right away as well - so the 'ol kitchen creative bug bit me in the keister and the result was a rather delicious surprise. (ok I'm sure plenty of other people have made banana mango bread but I'd like to think I'm special too).

So without further ado (although feel free to throw down a drum roll if you like) here is my Mango Ginger Banana Bread Recipe:

I'll list the earth friendly organic ingredients (thus the somewhat healthy banana bread recipe) that I try to use but you can use whatever you have on hand - I won't tell...

Mango Ginger Banana Bread Recipe Ingredients

1/2 cup organic sugar
1 tbs Truvia (I use the natural sweetener Truvia to cut down on the amount of sugar - you can supplement all of the sugar with a natural sweetener if you'd like)

1 stick organic butter
2 large organic eggs
2 large very ripe bananas
1/2 to 3/4 diced very ripe mango depending on how much you sample
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups whole wheat flour
1.5 tsp powdered ginger
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp sea salt

cinnamon sugar
coconut oil

Directions:
Heat oven to 350º - Grease bottom of 9x5x3 inch loaf pan with coconut oil. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.

Mix sugar and butter in large bowl. Stir in eggs until well blended. Stir in bananas, mango, buttermilk, and vanilla; beat until smooth. Stir in flour, ginger powder, baking soda, and sea salt just until moistened.

Pour into baking pan sprinkle top with cinnamon sugar and bake for about an hour - or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Let cool as long as you can resist the delectable smell and enjoy - last but not least send everyone you know back to Earth Friendly Goodies to tell us what they thought of our Banana Mango Ginger Bread recipe (not required but it is always nice)

Sure we try to eat organic when we can but little Fido (he asked to use a pseudonym for privacy reasons - he's shy like that) gets the gourmet treatment around here with these mighty tasty organic dog treats.

Not that I've taken a bite myself to find out, but with ingredients like organic rye flower, nutmeg and sweet potato these wheat free, corn free, soy free and dairy free organic dog treats sound pretty top notch even by people standards.

Not only are these organic dog treats loaded with simple organic ingredients but each has healthy benefits for "Fido" and your little (or not so little) pooch.

Here's the break down:

Organic Rye Flour: Helps strengthen your dog's immune system
Organic Oat Flour: Good source of protein, iron, copper and other nutrients
Nutmeg: Acts as an anti-inflammatory (plus it's like a gourmet dash of olfactory and palate pleasing pleasure)
Cinnamon: Good for brain function, improves blood circulation, and reduces canine heart disorders
Sweet Potato: Source of beta carotene to help metabolism and immune system
Flax Meal: Fantastic source of omega-3 fatty acids (the good for you fats that dogs need - and people too!)

We picked up a box of Sweet Potato Bare Bones organic dog treats on sale at Target, but it looks like you can find Big Bark Bakery dog treats at Amazon (although last I checked they were waiting for a new shipment - word has gotten out how good they are I guess)

Update: Unfortunately it looks like Big Bark Bakery has gone to doggy treat heaven such a shame since they were really good treats.

My adventures in Worm Composting in a small apartment begin today!

Are you tired of throwing perfectly good food scraps, junk mail, cardboard, and coffee grounds into the trash? I certainly am, but for a long time being wasteful just seemed like one of the unavoidable evils of living in a small apartment and having no yard to speak of. Despite this setback, I've been researching different compost options all summer long, hoping to find something that will work anywhere-even a small apartment-without creating offensive odors or taking up large quantities of precious space, or being overly time consuming (hey, I'm a busy girl, I've got a life you know!)

Some small scale homemade operations sounded promising-like one website that suggested taking a plastic container, drilling some holes (I don't own a drill, but maybe I could have bought one...and then learned how to use it...someday....), adding a few dried lawn clippings (never mind that I live in an apartment and don't have any dried lawn clippings), and found a spot for it outside (did I mention we don't have a yard?) Although this "do it yourself" compost idea gave me something to feel hopeful about-really it just made me want to keep looking. I wanted something tried and true-something easy-something that wouldn't take all summer to learn how to do. So my next big idea was to buy a big plastic drum with the little holes for aeration already drilled in. You just roll it over every so often to redistribute the nutrients-I could have bought a huge 55 gallon drum for around $150. This might have worked fine for someone with a yard to roll it around in, but my significant other was quick to point out our small patio had no room for "rolling around." It was with some difficulty that I had to scratch out yet another good plan (for someone else). No, facing up to facts, what I really needed was something that could go inside...an indoor composter that was pre-made, small, practical, odorless, and not some major eye sore.

Remember grandma's compost pile--the one that stunk every time she opened it to add a few new food scraps? That's called anaerobic composting. Anaerobic composting is smelly because that kind of bacteria operates without airflow. That's not what I wanted. I wanted aerobic composting-it sounds similar, but these air-loving bacteria thankfully can get the job of composting done without the stink. Good air circulation is key. If your compost smells bad, I have it on good authority that you are doing something wrong.
Over the weekend, I finally discovered the composting solution I've been searching for - worms. Worm are great, really. Worm castings are full of nutrients that plants just love. They are quiet, well mannered, polite, shy, and they're hard workers who will work for food, helping to give my food scraps a second life. I found this amazing invention on Amazon and it's called the Worm Factory. (I got the Worm Factory DS3GT 3-Tray Worm Composter).

If this doesn't work I don't know what will, but I'll keep you updated. So far I really like my Worm Factory worm composting bin. It was simple to set up and didn't require any tools-although I did make it a little easier on myself by using a screwdriver to ease the 2 bolts into place. The directions and pictures in the 16 page booklet were very helpful and actually interesting to read. I learned that citrus and some types of plants should not be added to the compost pile as they can harm the worms. Oh, and I learned that there are over 7,000 types of worms, but the kind you want to use in your composting worm farm are called red wigglers, also known as Eisenia fetida. They weigh next to nothing and they recommend you start with half a pound (500 red wigglers.) Amazon has worms for sale, but I did a search on Craigslist and found a local seller of composting worms. I decided to start out small and just bought 5 dozen (60 worms) because he was charging $1.50/dozen and I didn't see the point in going broke when red wigglers are supposed to reproduce quickly, doubling in number every three months. They are organic worms...I guess that implies there are other worms that are not organic? I'll see how it goes and I can always buy more worms later if needed. Otherwise, a pound of red composting worms on amazon was around $30.

I think it's also great that this worm composter is designed to direct the worms to migrate upwards toward the new food sources. Because worm composting worms climb to the top of the bin your composted material on the bottom is ready to be added to your garden - you don't have to worry about throwing all your worms out or having to sort them out first.

I also learned other helpful tips about freezing food scraps, microwaving, or chopping into small pieces to speed their decomposition. The composting worms do best between 60-80 degrees, so inside the apartment should be pretty comfortable. Pretty much everything I needed to get started with worm composting, including coir brick and shredded filling were included in the purchase price. You'll just need red wiggler worms, about a cup of compost or soil, and a few food scraps to get started.
Other product features of the worm factory include:

Made with post-consumer recycled plastic, Dimensions 16-inch x 16-inch x 13-inch

Built in "worm tea" collector tray and spigot for easy draining

Year Round Production

Odor Free Operation

Expandable up to 7 trays (You can buy an extra tray for around $10 on Amazon)

You see Swell Foop is a two sister tag team who believe in the good things in life - like the earth we live on and the furry, fuzzy, scaly, froggy, buggy, beautiful critters that scurry in the woods and oceans at night (ok so ocean dwelling creatures don't do much scurrying but it sounded good). Their current designs feature animals that are threatened by a variety of conditions, including global warming, human encroachment into animal's habitat, and hunting.

I encountered my first bamboo towels nearly 5 months ago, strolling around the gift shop of an exotic Chinese Garden in Vancouver Canada. The bamboo fabric was remarkably soft - so soft in fact I was determined to buy it then and there despite the high price tag of $70.

I have always been a soft towel nut; unfortunately, my experience with cotton has always been a disappointment. I've been told, "you have to wash them on cold if you want them to stay soft," but then on the other hand, I have been told, "you have to wash them on hot if you want them to get clean." And so in a relatively short time, those super soft cotton towels on display at the store become just average ordinary boring towels. Some people try to get around this dilemma using fabric softener - but I just can't bring myself to douse my towels in chemicals. No, I needed another solution-and discovering bamboo towels seemed to be it.

My bamboo towels have remained silky and soft like chenille despite dozens of washings. Yet there is more to make me love bamboo towels than silky softness. I also adore that bamboo is naturally antibacterial. Unlike cotton, I haven't had the need to wash my bamboo towels with vinegar to remove bad odors, because there aren't any!

Not All Bamboo Towels are Created Equal

Unfortunately, I've recently learned there is a downside to that soft textile. Bamboo itself is extremely fast growing which makes it one of the most Eco-friendly sustainable plants available - however, some of the chemicals used to make bamboo into soft clothing and towels can be quite hazardous to the environment and possibly even your health. Chemical solvents like sodium hydroxide and carbon disulphide may be combined with bleaching which is not a very Eco-friendly thing to do, and is typically known as the Bamboo Viscose Rayon method.

Some companies have begun manufacturing bamboo using the less toxic Bamboo Lyocell method, which I will be on the lookout for next time I need a new bamboo towel. I still think my bamboo towels are the best and its delicious softness is something you must experience for yourself. You don't even need to travel to an exotic Chinese Garden in Vancouver Canada to do so. Amazon has a fine selection of bamboo towels like these from Think Bamboo on sale for considerably less than the $70 bamboo towels I splurged on.

Once upon a time in a land far far away lived a puppy named Rufus. Rufus was a good little puppy so he got plenty of dog treats, treats when he held still for a nail clipping and a coat grooming, dog training treats when he rolled over on command and even treats for pretending to speak - he had his owners very well trained.

The problem was Rufus was unhappy, not unhappy because he felt unloved, he knew his people loved him very much, but Rufus was unhappy because his treats contained chemical fertilizers, antibiotics, and artificial preservatives - not to mention a certain amount of diseased meat by-products. (dead, dying, disabled or diseased food animals that have been rejected for human consumption end up in pet food and treats).

Rufus didn't think there was anything he could do about it, he knew his people would do anything for him if there was an alternative. So Rufus decided to take matters into his own paws and he called his good buddy Paul Newman - you know the one, that famous guy from all those movies who has his face on all those salad dressings now. Well Rufus said to Paul, you know buddy you have to look out for us pets, we need a healthy dog treat, in fact we'd love to have our own line of certified USDA organic dog treats.

Well Paul is a good guy so he created a line of Newman's Own®Organics Dog Treats (they make all sorts of organic pet food as well but little Rufus loved his treats best of all). Rufus told Paul to make these organic dog treats with human-grade ingredients, including certified-organic barley flour, ground chicken, carrots, apples, rolled oats, natural peanut flour, and a whole lot more natural and healthy ingredients - leave out the by-products, fertilizers, antibiotics, preservatives, artificial flavors, and colors thank you very much. Oh and leave out the wheat, soy and corn because Rufus and his friends were a bit allergic to it, not to mention it made them a bit gassy.

Paul was happy to oblige, he loved his dogs as well, and he created a great line of organic dog treats just for Rufus and his friends. So now when Rufus lets his people use dog training treats to get him to do embarrassing things he has a happy smile on his face because his pal Paul made sure he had some tasty organic dog treats. Rufus now is a very happy little puppy - just ask him he'll tell you.... after you give him a treat.

I feel somewhat sorry for my basil plant as it struggles inside and if it had eyes I'm sure they would longingly gaze outside and yearn for warmer days and fresh air.

I was perusing the latest Amazon email of great Holiday shopping ideas today and stumbled upon the AeroGrow AeroGarden - I could almost feel my basil plant's leaves rustle in excitement. If you haven't heard about the Aerogrow it is a home growing device about the size of a bread box that uses Aeroponic technology which means the plants grow in air and water, not dirt. My basil plant stirred with excitement as I read to him that plants grow five times faster using this method of eco-friendly growing.

Reading over the 200+ positive reviews of the AeroGrow was exciting as well. Hearing professional chefs rave over the quality of the herbs and plants had my basil plant nearly knocking me over to get to the "add to cart" button. And when I got to the part about the AeroGrow nutrient tablets being organic, according to American Association of Food Control Officials standards my basil was almost weeping with relief. (not to mention glaring at me that I wasn't reaching for my credit card yet).

I researched further to find that the AeroGrow can grow a wide variety of salad greens, tomatoes, herbs, chili peppers, flowers, and even catnip for those frisky kitties. The AeroGrow even comes with a free aerogarden seed kit to grow fresh Italian Basil, Purple Basil, Chives, Dill, Mint, Parsley & Thyme - you can just imagine what effect this had on my basil. Images of a bounty of fresh friends and perhaps the promise of a bit of Italian romance flitted through his head - I can hardly blame him for what came next...

There must be a secret language spoken between cats and herbs because before I knew it my scrawny little basil plant was waving distractedly in the air while my cat with a catnip crazed look in its eyes pounced on the "1-Click ordering" button - the deal was sealed I had a new AeroGrow AeroGarden on its way.

I can hardly blame them as I said, the thought of fresh healthy herbs and salads year round does give one a bit of a euphoric tingle.

Update 11/28/11: If you are keeping an eye on Amazon's Black Friday Week Lightning Deals then you may be interested in this news... it would appear that the AeroGrow AeroGarden is due for a huge Black Friday Sale discount at 2pm PST. Here is their tantalizing text... "Upcoming Deal:
